Week 2: Passing and Receiving

Warm-up – – Star Wars “Expert Knock-out” All players moving around inside the square with a ball. On the coaches’ command, the players use their ball to knockout any of their teammates balls out of the square. They can only do this by playing their own ball against their teammates. Once out of the square the only way back in is by performing a set number of juggles.

Coaching and organization

  • Coach the simple ‘instep’ striking/passing technique.
  • On the coaches’ command of freeze, each player has to freeze with their body in the ‘instep striking’ position.
  • Encourage players to rotate feet

Passing and Moving (groups of 2)

Players placed into groups of two using the ‘numbers game’ (from previous week) and pass and move within the grid. Players to stretch at two-minute intervals. After each stretch players are encouraged to become more explosive with and without the ball.
  • Player to be encouraged to cover every blade of grass within the square
  • Players to be shown the ‘instep’ passing technique
  • Players are encouraged to receive the ball away from pressure with their first touch using the inside or outside of the foot.
  • Players to receive and play the ball whilst on the move – Discourage stationary passes!
  • Players to sprint after passing the ball.

Progression

Upon hearing the coaches’ command, players are to perform the following –

  • Get together and play 5 short passes (5 yards apart) (left, right or both feet)
  • Get together and play 5 long passes.
  • As above but with long passes (10 yards)
  • Players are to carry on passing and moving when they’ve completed the short and/or long passes
  • As above, except players are to receive the ball with outside of the foot and then pass back, 5, 10 times etc!
Passing and moving. 3 v 1 possession (groups of 4) In groups of 4, players are passing and moving inside their own small square (inside the large coaches grid, thus, potentially 4 small squares) with each player assigned a number 1 – 4. When the coach calls a number, that number becomes the defender. The last team in possession wins 1 point. The first team to 5 goals wins!
  • The emphasis is now placed on the movement of the ball and the decision making on the ball.
  • We can now start to work on the weight of the passes and the support runs made by the players.
  • Reinforce ‘instep’ technique.
  • Players should be aware that the player with the ball should have two supporting who have created two short passing options ready to receive the ball.
