The NWU B95 team’s success is attributable not only to the amazing talent of its players, but to the team’s leader, Noal Cook, who spent the last two years as a volunteer NWU coach teaching tactical and technical skills to rival those of any of the larger soccer clubs. The NWU B95 accomplished a tremendous feat by playing extremely competitively in the Donosti Cup and winning their group in preliminary games.

Also competing in the Donosti Cup was the Northwest United G94 team. Following their 2-2 record in preliminary games (0-2, 4-0, 0-2, 1-0), they finished 3rd in their group which put them into the Consolation League. There they won their first two elimination games (10-0, 9-0) and then got knocked out with a close loss (0-1).

Communications
• Team websites are an easy and effective way to make information available. Eteamz and Shutterfly are free resources. 4 teams have websites. For more info, call Bob Raymond 466-4152.
• Monico mentioned that the Club is looking for a marketing and media person(s) to promote club activities in the Skagit Valley Herald, on radio stations, through school handouts, as well as any other creative ideas the Media person(s) identifies.
• Also, we would like to set up a small group of interested volunteers to examine opportunities for Club sponsorship, including grants from public and private entities. Barb Weymouth and Bob Raymond have agreed to help. Others who feel that they can assist in this are welcome. Contact Barb or Bob.
• We will send out coach and club evaluations in September–and again at the end of the fall season. All parents are urged to provide a full and candid assessment of team and club operations. This helps us improve the Club–something we are all interested in.

Manager/Treasurer Items
• Managers are reminded to pass along Club information by phone or through handouts at tryouts to those who do not have email.
• Everyone who has a volunteer position with the team must register and apply for RMA cards. Register as a coach on skvysa.org and let Marlene know so she can assign you to your actual job. whisonants@comcast.net
• Team Accounts are listed under several names: Skagit Select, Northwest United, and Skagit Storm. Audit rules require authorization for teams to continue to use any of these three names–although new accounts should be in the name of Northwest United. This was approved by the Board.
• Marlene has created statements for each team, which will be sent to teams each month. The $100 that parents paid online will show on the statements and deducted from funds teams owe. Scholarship information will show up next month’s statement and be deducted from team fees.
• When players leave teams, reimbursement is determined on a case-by-case basis bu Duane.
• Bob suggested establishing a club-wide standard fundraising target for each team and including this a part of the team cost sheet at tryouts. E.g., 15% of the total team costs.
• Teams wishing to raise funds at tournaments must check with the Tournament Director (Duane for Garrett Chase, Todd for Labor Day Kick).

Scholarship Committee. We awarded $14,150 in scholarships so far to 64 kids. Letters will be sent to recipients (and team treasurers) this week.

We will do another round of scholarships. The deadline is August 15 At this time, we will also evaluate any player who is seeking more than the original amount awarded. For players who need more than the $225 club fee, we will issue a more detailed application which will ask for more information. Those asking for additional funds must meet certain criteria. They MUST do field marshaling, they must be current with payments, and they must pay something – whether it is $25, or whatever.

Outreach. The EC met with Kristian Powell to discuss outreach opportunities to rec clubs, rec coaches, and rec players. As Outreach Director, Kristian will put together a plan for the year.

Training Activities. Kristian is holding a summer camp this week (June 28-July 2). Another week-long camp will be from August 9-13. Info on the website.
• Gary held one Finishing Camps and will be doing another on July 22 and 23. Gary donates his time but a $5 donation is requested, with collected money adding to our scholarship program. The first camp raised around $400 for scholarships.

Treasurer: Prior to the tournaments, the Club had $11,064.77 in the bank account. The following is a listing of monies made in the tournaments:
• Skagit River Cup (85 teams). $12,125 Total Profit. $7,801.25 Goes to NWU. $4,245 to PSSA
• Firecracker (255 teams). $66,000 Total Profit. $42,918 to NWU. $23,109 to PSSA
• Last year NWUnited’s total revenue for all tournaments was $30,000.

Referee Assignor: We had a lot of new refs, some are young kids. Coaches are encouraged to take this into account and control themselves and their sidelines. There will be a referee class in August. There is no age limit, but Duane suggests a minimum age of 12.

Fields. We will need to develop 3 more fields as the Whitmarsh fields will be abandoned, as Burlington changes its flood plan.
• Goals at Whitmarsh are now numbered 11-18. The current schedule is posted on the website–and was sent to all coaches and managers.
• You are allowed ONE goal–not two. If goals are not in use, you may use two, but you must give one up if the assigned team arrives. If you want to change practice days or times contact Chuck. clamay@comcast.net
• If you want to extend your practice time, you have to start at 4:30-6:30 or 6:30-8:30.
• Please move the goals around to use as much of the fields as you can, to reduce wear on the grass.
• Don’t lift the goals because of the danger in doing so. Push them as this is safer and easier.
• If you want to schedule a practice game at Skagit River Park, contact Chuck, with a few days notice. Fee is $30.

Tournaments. Thanks to teams who provided field marshals.

Some teams didn’t provide the required number for either the Skagit River Cup or the Firecracker. If teams don’t want to provide marshals, they can pay the tournament fee–and we will hire help. The following teams did not provide assigned field marshals: SRC (4 needed): GU12 Warman –2 showed; BU17 Goode – 0; GU11 Moulton – 0; GU13 Strom – 3 showed. We don’t yet have the list from the Firecracker, but there were a few repeat offenders. Those teams will be contacted.

Garrett Chase Memorial Tournament, there are 35 teams so far. The tournament takes place July 23, 24, 25. We need to know if the following teams are entering the tournament: BU12 Warman; BU13 Rutherford; GU16 Colvin. Scheduling for this tournament will be July 11.

SkVYSA Representative: Last year San Juan teams registered with NWU as a district silver team. They were charged $40 to register. This year they may play in Burlington as a part of the North County Rec League.
