Donosti Cup

July 16th, 2010

Caley Powers Double Teamed

The Northwest United B95 Red team recently competed in the prestigious 19th Annual Donosti Cup Soccer Tournament in San Sebastián Spain.  Skagit Valley’s prominent soccer guy, Gary Warman, has been taking teams to Europe to compete since 1990 and, until this year, had never had a boys team win a game in Europe.

The NWU B95 team’s success is attributable not only to the amazing talent of its players, but to the team’s leader, Noal Cook, who spent the last two years as a volunteer NWU coach teaching tactical and technical skills to rival those of any of the larger soccer clubs.  The NWU B95 accomplished a tremendous feat by playing extremely competitively in the Donosti Cup and winning their group in preliminary games.

Also competing in the Donosti Cup was the Northwest United G94 team.  Following their 2-2 record in preliminary games (0-2, 4-0, 0-2, 1-0), they finished 3rd in their group which put them into the Consolation League.  There they won their first two elimination games (10-0, 9-0) and then got knocked out with a close loss (0-1).
